John has worked in the payroll profession for all his working life.

For almost 24 years John was in the Pay and Administration Branch of the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer. During his time in the Royal Navy John worked in various Payroll and Personnel Offices throughout the world and at sea. After promotion to Warrant Officer, the youngest ever to be selected at that that time, John was the Officer in Charge of the Pay Office in two major shore establishment, including the largest in the UK. Responsibilities included staff training, employment and career planning.

On leaving the Royal Navy John became the Payroll Supervisor of a multi national petro-chemical construction company, where over 80% of the employees on the UK payroll worked overseas, virtually world wide. Whilst with this company John received a thorough grounding in the National Insurance rules with regard to expatriates and foreign nationals working in the UK.

From this company John moved to another multi national company as the Payroll Systems Supervisor and subsequently the Payroll Manager, where his responsibilities included the payroll and cashier functions.

After almost ten years John moved to work for Cadbury Schweppes plc as the Group Remuneration Manager, the duties of which included the payroll for all foreign nationals working in the UK , all Directors working in the UK and Group employees. In addition. ne acted as a Personnel Manager for all the Group Directors in the UK, dealing with world wide share option plans, incentive plans, etc., and the Administrator for the Directors' Pension Scheme.

John has, for many years, been conducting training courses for payroll and personnel staff, on tax and national insurance for foreign nationals working in the UK and expatriates. He has also tutored for the Institute of Payroll and Pensions Management's (IPPM) Diploma in Payroll Management, a two year distance learning course, equivalent to NVQ level 5.

He is also the Chair of the Editorial Committee for IPPM's monthly payroll and pensions magazine, PAYadvice, and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board and regular contributor to Payroll Briefing, a fortnightly payroll newsletter.

He is a Fellow of the IPPM - a grade of membership awarded only to those who have made a "significant contribution to the payroll or pension profession".
